Suspended Disbelief by Ramzi Mallat presents sculptural works and imagery that explore impermanence, blending loss with possibility. Inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s notion of “suspension of disbelief”, Mallat reinterprets it to examine the contradictions of an absurd reality, fusing the tangible with the ephemeral.
At the heart of the exhibition is the evil eye, a symbol of protection and uncertainty, deeply rooted in Mediterranean folklore. Reimagined as both safeguard and disruption, it challenges perceptions of belief, doubt, and superstition. Through immersive spatial interventions, Mallat invites audiences to reconsider how ancient symbols persist in modern contexts, shaping our understanding of fate, fear, and identity.
Situated in Beirut’s dynamic cultural landscape, Suspended Disbelief reflects on tradition and transformation, creating a space for introspection and renewal.
Ramzi Mallat’s practice explores cultural identity within a globalized world, drawing from Levantine theology and folklore to challenge conventional narratives of tradition. Based between London and Beirut, he holds a BA in Fine Art from Lancaster University and an MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art.
A Trustee of the IMOS Foundation in the UK, Mallat was named in Forbes Middle East’s 30 Under 30 list in 2022. His short film Sobhiye (2022) has received multiple international awards.
