A word from the founder

TAKEOVER’S FIRST YEAR

.

As we enter the new year with more uncertainty than before, I would like to reflect back on my journey with Takeover, a project space that was founded spontaneously, with adaptability and flexibility in mind. With a passion and zero experience of running a space, I jumped into the unknown with abandon and little expectation. I can only parallel this with becoming a parent; and here I was suddenly a parent of two: the space and my son. Just like a child, Takeover required much more attention, time and energy than I anticipated, but in return I learned and gained so much. I am deeply grateful to each and every person who contributed, supported and believed in me and to my fellow artists who trusted me with their work. In a span of just one year we were able to host exhibitions, open studios, workshops, performances, installations, gatherings, movie screenings, book signings and a reading room!

Such an intense year meant that I had to put my own artistic practice aside, so this year I would like to give it more attention. Takeover will continue its series of open calls and remain available for artists and curators to “takeover”, but in the meantime it will become my personal studio space to develop projects that have been sitting on the bench for the past year.
